Make a vector art

This tutorial will show you how to make a vector art with Photoshop. But this actually works with Paint Shop Pro also. The only thing is that it's harder with PSP, in my opinion. I'm really bad at making vector art so maybe a lot of you will end up with things 10 000 times better than mine.

- First, choose a picture. Try to take an easy picture first. Only head shots are better if you're starting. I chose this nice Rachel Stevens picture.

- First, create a new layer that you'll call "face" or anything you want.

- Then, choose 3 shades of colour for the face. Select the middle colour.

- Then, take the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

- With the Polygonal Lasso Tool, follow the outline of the face. You can go over the hair, anyway, we'll make a new layer that will go over it and that will be the hair.

- Now, make sure you have the middle shade face colour and flood fill that selection you made.

- Then, you can play with the opacity so you can see what's under your layer. It's important to adjust it cos you have to see where the highlights and shadows are so you can do it.

- Now, again with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, select some places and flood fill your selections. What is important to know is that, your shading doesn't have to be really complicated. Just look at the face and you'll easily see where it's dark and where it's light.

- See? You may think this looks ugly, but it's not completed yet. It's just to show you that your shading doesn't have to be complicated to be efficient.

- Now, choose some colours for the lips.

- Now, with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, draw the outlines of the lips and flood fill with your colours.

- Then, same thing with eyebrows and eyes. For the eyelashes, just make some triangles... Again, for vector art, simple is the best!

- Now, create a new layer and name it "hair" or whatever you want. The only thing that is important is that it's over the face layer.

- Now, choose colours for the hair.

- And now, always with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, draw the outlines of the hair and flood fill your selection. And then, do the same thing as for the face, make some highlights and shadows. Here, she's got a shirt so, don't forget the shirt... and obviously, I didn't say it but you can see she's got a neck so don't forget the neck either!

- Then, delete the layer that contains the picture. Merge the layers and flood fill the colour you want for the background

- Then, you can arrange some things with the pencil. Like, I had some white dots in some places so I arranged it. Her mouth was weird too so I arranged it with the pencil. Then, make the image 256 colours and save it as a gif (it's ugly as a jpg). And... here's your vector art!!!
